Good news for fans of the original Late Night With Conan O'Brien. NBC has announced that when O'Brien takes over The Tonight Show this June, he will be joined by his original late night sidekick Andy Richter.
Richter left Late Night almost nine years ago to pursue his own acting career, but since then has only been involved in a long list of non-starters including the failed sitcoms Andy Richter Controls the Universe and Andy Barker, P.I.. Apparently, he'll be joining The Tonight Show as the "announcer" and will participate in "comedic pieces." Hopefully, they'll use him in the right way and he won't want to leave again.
But what does this mean for the future of current Tonight Show announcer and Howard Stern Show deserter "Stuttering" John Melendez? Surely, Jay Leno will bring him over to his nightly prime time talk show, right? Don't count on it.
Conan still managed to be really funny without Richter for nearly a decade, but I'd be lying if I said the promise of seeing the two back together again didn't give me some new hope for Conan's Tonight Show.
Conan and Andy Richter will take over The Tonight Show beginning June 1.
