Just for Laughs Chicago Festival: Day 3

Saturday June 20, 2009

Day Three of the 2009 Just for Laughs Chicago festival (I'm sorry...what I meant to say was "TBS Presents A Very Funny Festival: Just for Laughs Chicago") brought my most-anticipated show of the entire five-day fest: the Mr. Show reunion of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross in "Bob and David and Friends." But first, it would be yet another stand-up showcase.

I tried not to bring my own baggage to the first show at the Lakeshore Theater, "Double Threat: Jim Breuer and Danny Bhoy." Several late nights and lots and lots of comedy were beginning to wear me down. Worse yet, flooding in Chicago had made it very difficult to get to the theater; at one point, I was fairly convinced I would miss the show altogether. So it's no faint praise when I say that Scottish comic Danny Bhoy, the first half of "Double Threat," (which he pointed out makes no sense, as there's very little that's threatening about comedy) made me forget my lousy mood within just a few minutes. I wish I could say that the entirety of his act was as good as his opening -- I can't -- but he was engaging and likable. I've been pleasantly surprised by a lot of new comics during the Just for Laughs Chicago festival. Check out the full review of "Double Threat" to get my thoughts on Jim Breuer and the show as a whole.

After a good deal of time spent waiting in line in the rain and talking to Chicago's own Rusty Nails, it was time for the sold-out "Bob and David and Friends." The show was a lot of fun and reminded me just how much I miss seeing Bob and David performing together -- enough that I may want to go through all four season of Mr. Show on DVD for the 10th or 11th time. Not even the fact that I was seated next to the two worst audience members on the planet could fully spoil my enjoyment of the show (they were really drunk and really, really awful). I won't say "Bob and David and Friends" was the funniest show I've been to during the festival -- that honor still belongs to "The Nasty Show" -- but I still had a pretty good time. Read my full review of "Bob and David and Friends" for a full rundown of this Mr. Show reunion.

With not enough time to make it to "The Very Funny Show" at Zanies (featuring John Mulaney, who also did a set in the Bob and David show) and too much time before Bob Odenkirk at ImproOlympic, I opted to head home and go to sleep. I'm a lightweight.

Next up: Lisa Lampanelli at the Chicago Theater. That means lots of racial humor and expensive parking.
