Variety Announces "10 Comics to Watch" for 2011

By July 31, 2011

Follow me on:

Amy SchumerIt's that time of year again. Variety has unveiled its list of 10 comics to watch for 2011, and it's another mix of up and comers, familiar names (if you're a comedy nerd) and somewhat obscure newcomers. This year's crop includes:

  • Jerrod Carmichael
  • Chris D'Elia
  • Josh Fadem
  • Pete Holmes
  • Thomas Middleditch
  • Tim Minchin
  • Amy Schumer
  • Rebel Wilson
  • Harris Wittels
  • Ali Wong

Past comics to appear on the Variety list include Donald Glover, Garfunkel and Oates, Nick Kroll, Kristen Schaal, Kyle Kinane and Hannibal Buress (if you're so inclined, check out the complete lists from 2009 and 2010). If the publication's past predictions are any indication, most of these names will be much more familiar within the next year or two. A few of them already are; Chris D'Elia landed the male lead opposite Whitney Cummings on her fall sitcom Whitney; Tim Minchin just performed a show every night at this summers Just for Laughs Chicago festival, and Rebel Wilson appeared as Kristen Wiig's bizarre British roommate in Bridesmaids. The comic whose inclusion makes me happiest is Amy Schumer, who is very, very funny and whose debut album Cutting recently made my list of the best of the year so far. She's going to blow up huge very soon. As for those comics I'm not totally familiar with, I look forward to checking them out.
