Jack Black and Kyle Gass, better known as the comedy rock duo Tenacious D, are working on a dream line up for what they hope is the first-ever Festival Supreme, a comedy festival made up of entirely musical comedians and musical comedy teams.
On the group's dream list for a lineup is Flight of the Conchords, Zach Galifianakis, Tim Minchin, Eric Idle, The Lonely Island, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim and more. The festival is currently scheduled to take place October 19 at the Santa Monica Pier, but very little appears to be firmed up at the time.
If you're anything like me, you read that lineup and immediately think of all the acts that aren't on it -- groups like Garfunkel & Oates or Hard & Phirm, or solo acts such as Jon Lajoie and Reggie Watts. But it's very early, and there will undoubtedly be a lot of empty slots to fill if this festival does indeed become a thing. It's clear that Black and Gass' hearts are in the right place, so I have no doubt that they'll be reaching out to musical comedians both established and those looking for a break. This would a be a huge opportunity for any such comic.
What do you guys think? Is anyone else surprised that no one has had this idea before? It basically combines the traditional comedy festival with the feeling of a Lollapalooza, and it seems like a no-brainer. Tenacious D has the star power to make it happen, so I have little doubt that you should book your calendars for October if you're hoping to make it. It's just a question of what the lineup will be, and how many of the group's pipe dream acts will agree to perform.
