Actress Jennifer Lawrence, currently nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook, joined the list of talented actors with spotty SNL hosting gigs this season (a list that also includes Daniel Craig and Jeremy Renner). Though visibly nervous through her monologue, Lawrence did a fine job as host of the show, committing to every bit no matter how ridiculous (and one sketch, which dressed her up like a dog, hit new lows as far as ridiculous is concerned). It was some weak material that ultimately let her down, which was especially disappointing because I suspect she could have shone under better circumstances.
Instead, the episode mostly found her shoehorned into preexisting bits, only giving her a legitimately comedic role in two or three sketches. The episode tried its best to comment on some of the crazy news stories of late, but even those were brushed aside after a cold open that rushed through them all. From there, it was kind of a downward spiral of half-formed ideas that could have been something and fully-formed ideas that should never have seen airtime. Perhaps this episode served to appropriately manage expectations for what's to come in the weeks ahead, with episodes being hosted by the likes of Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine and one Justin Bieber.
