Comedy Central is joining forces with SiriusXM Satellite Radio for Comedy Central Radio, a 24-hour channel devoted to all things funny.
Comedy Central Radio is going to be exactly what it sounds like -- the audio arm of Comedy Central, which has gradually moved further and further away from stand-up comedy and more towards scripted original programming. The channel will play stand-up routines from a variety of comics, as well as full-length specials, exclusive content and even episodes of now-defunct shows like Premium Blend and Comedy Central Presents. Comedians will also occasionally act as guest DJs, which is maybe the most exciting part of the endeavor. I would love to hear some of my favorite comics play their favorite routines from other comics.
SiriusXM is already pretty loaded up with comedy, with at least four channels -- Raw Dog, Laugh USA, Blue Collar Radio and Jamie Foxx's Foxxhole -- mostly devoted to stand-up. While I'm not sure the satellite provider can really support another all-comedy channel, at least this one has the brand recognition and promotional muscle of Comedy Central behind it.
Comedy Central Radio is expected to launch some time this spring.
