The new cast of Dancing with the Stars has been announced, and two comedians are part of the lineup.
D.L. Hughley and Andy Dick will be among the stars competing in the popular reality show's 16th (!) season on the air. Hughley I get, because he's still a name (mostly thanks to his sitcom The Hughleys, which ran from 1998 to 2002), even if dancing on a reality show is considerably beneath his talents. Andy Dick is more of a surprise, seeing as he's been completely unstable and unpredictable in recent years. He has been arrested at least six times since 1999 (most recently in 2011) and had numerous other altercations with the law that didn't result in arrest -- just bad publicity for the comic.
I have to believe that Dick -- once a star of really good comedies like The Ben Stiller Show and NewsRadio -- has gotten his act together; Dancing with the Stars considers itself a "family" show, and isn't likely to take a chance on someone who's going to earn them bad press.
Hughley and Dick aren't the first comedians to appear on Dancing with the Stars. Past cast members include Adam Carolla, Margaret Cho, Penn Jillette, Jeffrey Ross, David Alan Grier and Niecy Nash have all competed in the past, though none of them made it very far. Maybe this year's comics will fare better.
The new season of Dancing with the Stars kicks off March 18 on ABC.
