Emcee

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The emcee, as it pertains to comedy, is the "host" of a show at a comedy club. The emcee is usually the least experienced comic, and is followed by the feature comedian (second) and headliner comedian (the final act). An emcee typically does a short routine, then comes out between each act and introduces the other comedians. The emcee is typically the first - and lowest-paying - professional job that a new comedian will get. The job allows for the emcee to get a foot in the door, to network with other comedians and to get comfortable working out material in front of an audience. An emcee that does a good job can get noticed by the club's owner or talent booker and might graduate to being the "feature" comic.
Pronunciation: M-C
Also Known As: Host, M.C., Master of Ceremonies
Alternate Spellings: M.C., MC
Examples:
The emcee told a few jokes before introducing the headlining comedian, Greg Giraldo.
